The purpose of this organization is, as stated by the national AAEP,
“to improve the health and welfare of the horse, to further the professional development of its members, and to provide resources and leadership for the benefit of the equine industry.”

Membership shall be limited to students currently enrolled at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Membership is not limited based on a student’s area of emphasis or chosen career path—any member at the College of Veterinary Medicine may participate in events as long as he/she is a dues-paid member of SCAVMA. We suggest that all of our members obtain health insurance, PLIT liability insurance, and have signed a waiver of liability provided by UGA CVM.

To be considered “active”, a member must be a dues-paid, active member of the national AAEP, attend all meetings held by the organization, and must volunteer to help at one chapter event per semester. Those members deemed “active” in accordance with the constitution shall be given priority for funding of extra-curricular events, including but not limited to National Convention, ROLEX Kentucky 3-Day Event, and other CE events sponsored by the National AAEP. Active status will be monitored via a points system, recorded by the Secretary. Members earn points when they participate in the planning, set-up, or break down of events sponsored by the scAAEP. Additional opportunities for points will be brought forward to the students by electronic correspondence via the chapter Secretary. All members will be aware of their point status and allowed access to all point records.

Each year, the scAAEP will grant scholarship(s) to a 3rd year veterinary student who is an active member in good standing with the chapter and who is a national AAEP member. The Secretary will announce when applications are being accepted. All submitted applications will be considered by the Executive Officers with the final decision reserved for the faculty advisor.

Our monthly meetings feature respected faculty and equine practitioners. We provide a wide range of topics that are applicable to both general and specialty practice. All members wishing to be informed of chapter activity should e-mail our Secretary and request to be added to the listserv. This will serve as our official line of communication with chapter members.

All executive powers shall be vested in the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Treasurer-Elect, and Fundraising Chair. To be considered for office, a candidate must be a student in good standing with the University of Georgia and a dues-paid member of the national AAEP. Elections are run through scAVMA and take place every February.

While it is not necessary to be a National Student Member to join our school's student chapter, many benefits such as the Avenues Internship/Externship Program are available only to students who are a current National Student Member. Annual dues for AAEP National Student Membership is $35.
